Study Abroad Programs

Country-Focused Summer Programs

During the summer term, we invite students from around the world to participate in a series of interdisciplinary, country-focused programs that are specially designed to equip you with particular knowledge of France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain, or the United States.

At the Madrid, Paris, London and Florida campuses, you take both a social-science-based course - examining the contemporary politics and social issues of the host country - and a humanities-based course focusing on significant aspects of its cultural history. The goal is to provide a basis for understanding the development of contemporary social values in each nation.

If you do not wish to pursue language studies, you can choose a third class from a variety of other courses. In Madrid and Heidelberg, students have the further option of studying Spanish or German, respectively, by taking one or more intensive (20 hours/week) four- or eight-week language courses.

Examples of courses included in these programs:

BA 481 Doing Business in the U.S.A.
EC 380 The British Economy
EC/PS 481 The Environmental Movement in the U.S.A.
EN 453 Current Drama in London

The New Europe Term Abroad Program

The 27 nations of the European Union have been engaged in the difficult process of pursuing a more unified market, a coordination of monetary systems and a greater degree of political unity. They have been striving to forge new economic, commercial and political links with nations of eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Combined with the effects of the reunification of Germany, these developments are having a major impact upon the nature of international business and trade, as well as the international political scene.

Schiller's special New Europe Term Abroad program in London, Heidelberg and Paris aims to prepare you for the opportunities and challenges arising from these developments. It is constructed around a number of seminars delivered by European business specialists who are qualified to teach the economic background and to provide other insights into taking advantage of new European prospects.

In addition, there are introductory courses in international business which provide the basis for advanced studies in fields such as European banking, international marketing, the European Union, international business policy, and other subjects.

This program is offered during the summer term and during the fall/spring semesters in Heidelberg, Madrid, Paris, and London. (Please refer the course catalog for specific courses.) A Semester of Drama Study in London

Our Drama Study in London program involves practical theater workshops at the British National Theatre, five minutes' walk from the London campus at Waterloo. You will also attend some of the current plays being shown in London. Prestigious external contributors to these new drama courses include The City Literary Institute, which has a highly reputable drama department, and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

This program is ideal for all students of theater studies, drama, and English literature. It offers particular advantages to American students who wish to study theater in an international setting.

Courses covering both traditional and modern drama are offered, combined with a professionally taught performance element that enhances understanding of classical and contemporary theater and its place in today's artistic world. This combination of old and new equips students with critical insight and an informed perspective - essential if you choose to pursue an acting career.

Drama offers one of the deepest studies of human nature and motivation. The performance studies will give you the experience of acting on many levels and will integrate the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the craft.

The program's academic component offers a firm foundation in the history of theater, as well as specific studies of influential dramatists.

Students can choose from the following Academic and Performance modules:

  •     Shakespeare, Elizabethan & Jacobean Drama
  •     Classical Drama
  •     Irish Drama & Oscar Wilde
  •     20th Century Drama

Each module carries 3 credits for academic studies and 3 credits for performance studies.

This Drama Study program includes visits to famous and historic places in the current theater scene.

Students will attend plays at the Globe Theatre, the Royal National Theatre, and other West End theaters, as well as Stratford-upon-Avon.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in drama workshops directly on campus. Observing and discussing high-quality productions in London's mainstream and fringe theaters is an integral part of this experience.
