Graduate Admissions

Schiller International University would like to welcome you and all students from around the world with a variety of educational backgrounds. Schiller is an equal opportunity institution and disregards race, religion, gender, national origin, or country of citizenship during the admissions process.

Although we offer open enrollment throughout the year without application deadlines, many visas and foreign exchange authorities often require lengthy and complicated processes. Therefore, we strongly advise applicants who require visas to apply at least two months before the beginning of the semester in which they plan to enroll.

Schiller International University is able to advise applicants of their acceptance or rejection soon after receipt of all application materials (including transcripts). Within three weeks of this notification, accepted students are expected to send in the non-refundable tuition deposit, which will be credited against fees due.

Applications are handled on an individual basis. An applicant's race, religion, national origin, gender, or country of citizenship are not taken into consideration in determining admission to the university program.

Graduate Admission Requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent, with a major in the graduate area for which they are applying. Students with undergraduate degrees in another field may be required to complete preparatory courses. For entry into the MIM, MA in International Hotel and Tourism Management or the MA in Communication programs, the applicant may hold a Bachelor's degree in any field.

Applicants must have maintained a good academic record in their undergraduate studies. If the applicant has below a 2.4 undergraduate GPA, a minimum GMAT score of 450 is required for entry into the degree program and a provisional admission will be granted. During the provisional admission,  the student is required to take up to 5 senior-level undergraduate courses and  receive a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the term. If the requirements are satisfactorily met, the student will be admitted to the degree program.

Non-native English speakers must pass the SIU English Placement Test to enter the graduate program or provide scores of at least 550 (or 213 for the computerized TOEFL test) on a TOEFL test taken within the previous two years. Students must have their official TOEFL scores sent directly to SIU's U.S. Admissions Office prior to their first registration at Schiller. Unofficial or student copies of TOEFL scores cannot be accepted. Schiller's TOEFL I.D. number is 0835.

Advanced level English instruction (Eng 131-132) may be taken concurrently with graduate courses. Total credit hours, however, may not exceed 16. Therefore, students required to take English language courses may need more than the minimum number of terms to complete their program. Enrollment  in the prescribed English classes is required upon registration for the first and all subsequent terms at Schiller and cannot be postponed.

MBA students will be required to present a GMAT score as a graduation requirement. There is no cut-off score. An MBA student for whom we have not yet received an official GMAT score will not receive his/her diploma and will not be issued a transcript with a degree completion notation. Students are responsible for the GMAT exam fees.

All graduate students are requested to have a laptop computer. The laptop must be Pentium-based with a 28.8 speed modem, the usual office software (Suggested: Windows XP or higher), and WIFI capability (except for the Leysin campus). Proof of ownership of such a laptop is required at the student's first registration. Schiller will make laptops available for a fee if a student does not already own one.

Applicants who have worked full-time should submit curriculum vitae (résumé) containing name and address of their employers, dates of employment, job title, and a short description of duties.

English Requirements

The language of instruction at Schiller International University is English, and proficiency in the English language is essential for students to successfully complete their degree studies with the necessary high academic average.

Graduate students who submit, prior to registration, an official TOEFL score less than three years old, of 550 (213 computer-based/79 Internet-based), directly from the Educational Testing Services; an IELTS score, directly from IELTS, less than three years old, of 6 bands or better; an APIEL score less than three years old, score of 3 or better, directly from APIEL; or TOEIC score less than three years old, score of 775 or better, directly from TOEIC, will be exempt from the English language exam and from English classes.

These students will be exempt from the English Placement Exam and from English as a Foreign Language classes. However, if they wish to receive credits for English, they must take the English Placement Exam. This exam is administered during the orientation and registration periods at all campuses.

Students who are unable to take and/or submit the minimum required scores for the above are required to take the English Placement Exam at any of the Schiller campuses where they wish to register and study.

In most cases, Schiller will be able to provide English language instruction at the level indicated by the English Placement Exam for students who are not proficient in English.

All new students, graduate and undergraduate, whose native language is not English and who have not submitted official copies of the TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL, or TOEIC scores described above are required to take the English Placement Exam before they will be permitted to register for their university courses. It is important to take the test at the earliest possible time, in order to ensure that the results are ready by registration. For students who arrive late, additional test dates can be scheduled-this will, however, further delay the student's registration and will be at a charge to the student.

Note: As the English Placement Exam is administered on campus, this option is not available to online students. Students whose native language is not English, and who are applying to Schiller's online programs must submit official copies of the TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL, or TOEIC scores as described above.

The test score determines whether or not a student will be required to take additional English language instruction. If the test results indicate that he/she does not need any more English language instruction, he/she will be able to register for their regular university studies. In this case, an undergraduate student may be granted a total of up to 16 elective semester credits for proficiency in English as a foreign language. Should the score indicate that a student requires advanced English language courses, he/she may be granted up to 8 elective credits and will be required to complete another 8 undergraduate credits in English language courses together with some regular university courses.

Students who are not proficient in English will be enrolled in either intermediate or advanced English language instruction, as indicated by their score on the English Placement Exam.

If the score indicates that a student requires intermediate level English language courses, he/she will have to complete 16 undergraduate credits of English language instruction, taking intermediate and advanced English classes. While enrolled in intensive intermediate English classes, a student may enroll at the same time for some selected university courses during fall and spring semesters and summer sessions. When a student begins advanced English classes, he/she may take more general university courses at the same time.

Note: Graduate students who are required to take additional English courses based on their test results are required to pay for the English courses in addition to the university courses.

MBA students will be required to present a GMAT score as a graduation requirement. There is no cutoff score. An MBA student for whom we have not yet received an official GMAT score will not receive his/her diploma and will not be issued a transcript with a degree completion notation. Students are responsible for the GMAT exam fees.

All graduate students are requested to have a laptop computer. The laptop must be Pentium-based with a 28.8 speed modem, the usual office software (suggested: Windows XP or higher), and Wi-Fi capability (except for the Leysin campus). Proof of ownership of such a laptop is required at the student's first registration.

Applicants who have worked full-time should submit curriculum vitae (résumé) containing names and addresses of their employers, dates of employment, job titles, and a short description of duties.

Summer Session Admission

Applicants for summer graduate study must be qualified graduate students majoring in the subject of the program for which they are applying. Applications are also accepted from students with Bachelor's degrees who wish to attend graduate courses without becoming candidates for Master's degrees.

Admission of Undergraduates to Graduate Courses

Undergraduate seniors attending Schiller who are within 6 credits of fulfilling all requirements for the Bachelor's degree in their programs and who have already been accepted for graduate studies at Schiller may be admitted by permission of the graduate program advisor to graduate courses for which they have the necessary prerequisites. The student's academic load should total no more than 18 credits altogether. This option is open only to students currently enrolled at Schiller with a 2.8 grade point average.
