Before registration, all new students, graduate and undergraduate, for whom English is a second language, are required to take the English Placement Examination. Students whose examination results indicate lack of English proficiency will be placed in appropriate level English classes.
Schiller International University offers students with inexperienced English an opportunity to take an intensive English program at the London, Florida, or Leysin campuses. After successfully completing this course, students will be able to follow lectures and do all their coursework in English.
Enrollment in the relative English classes is required upon registration for the first and all subsequent terms at Schiller and cannot be postponed.
Students who submit official test scores that are the same or better as those listed above will not be required to take the English Placement Exam. However, they must take the exam during the registration process of their first term at Schiller if they wish to receive EFL credits.
*IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
Conditions
Students for whom English is a second language may select English to fulfill the foreign language requirement. The foreign language requirement will be waived and completion of 16 semester credits for individuals that indicate proficiency in English is mandatory. However, these students will still be expected to complete EN 111-112, which is required for all students. Students whose test results do not qualify them for a complete waiver of the foreign language requirement may be granted up to 8 semester credits.
Note: The English language requirement for all students is the completion of an advanced level of English (by exam or by completing the appropriate courses). Native English speakers must choose another language to fulfill the foreign language requirement.
Note: There is no credit given for English as a Foreign Language courses taken at other institutions or for TOEFL results. Credit is granted either for Schiller English as Foreign Language classes or for an appropriate score result from the Schiller English Placement Examination only.
Advanced Placement in Foreign Languages
Advanced standing and credit will be granted to new students who have attained proficiency in English, French, German, or Spanish as a foreign language. At the beginning of every semester, each campus administers examinations in English, French, German, and Spanish to students who qualify to take the exams. Students taking an exam must be full-time students, the language in which the exam is being taken cannot be the student's native language, and students cannot have taken for credit any courses at Schiller or any other college or university in the language in which they are taking the exam.
Credit by examination will be granted for only one language. To receive credit by examination, students must take the appropriate language exam during the first term for which they are registered at Schiller. For students taking the examinations in French, German, or Spanish, the foreign language requirement will be waived if the test results indicate that they have mastered the language beyond the intermediate level, and up to 16 semester credits can be granted. Students whose test results indicate that they have mastered the language beyond the elementary level will be granted up to 8 semester credits, but they are required to complete courses at the intermediate level of the language in order to fulfill the foreign language requirement.
